Crystal Mile 2013 Nominations Feature Toydini

October 21st, 2013

Guy Walter’s Emirates Stakes hope Toydini is one of 16 horses nominated for one of the key Cox Plate Day support races at Moonee Valley this Saturday, the 2013 Crystal Mile.

The Bernardini four-year-old will use the $220,000 Group 2 Schweppes Crystal Mile (1600m) this Saturday as a final lead-up for the $1 million Group 1 Emirates Stakes over the Flemington mile on Saturday November 9.

They were last seen running third, beaten only a quarter length by the Chris Waller-trained winner Boban, in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick at the start of the month and must now make their Melbourne debut on Saturday.

The 2013 Crystal Mile nominations feature plenty of depth including Waller’s reigning Doncaster Mile champion Sacred Falls.

Four-year-old O’Reilly stallion Sacred Falls hasn’t won a race since they relished the mud Randwick track in April to take out the Doncaster, their most recent effort being an eighth in the Epsom.

There are a few other runners meanwhile that come via better lead-up into the Crystal Mile including the Colin Scott-trained Speediness.

A son of Testa Rossa, the six-year-old won the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis first-up at Flemington before two Group 1 fourths behind Rebel Dane (Sir Rupert Clarke) and Solzhenitsyn (Toorak Handicap) respectively.

Also coming via a stellar run in the Toorak Handicap, held over the 1600m at Caulfield on October 12, is the third placed Blackie from the Yangery stables of Jarrod McLean.

Other noteworthy Crystal Mile nominees include Jim Conlan’s 2011 Cox Plate third placegetter Rekindled Interest, and two last start winners with the Gai Waterhouse-trained Rain Drum and Roger James’ smart mare Zonza.

Fastnet Rock six-year-old Rain Drum is very lightly raced for their age with 11 starts and are yet to finish out of the money with six wins and five minor placings.

Most recently they were seen scoring a narrow first-up win at Rosehill in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m).

A daughter of Zabeel, Zonza meanwhile has back-to-back wins to her credit at her two most recent runs and comes off a Group 3 Caulfield win from Thousand Guineas Day last week.

The official 2013 Crystal Mile field and barriers will be out on Wednesday and published right here so stay tuned.
