Trust In A Gust Headlines Crystal Mile Nominations

October 20th, 2014

Trust In A Gust has been one of the star performers during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival to date and is set to contest the 2014 Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley on Saturday after being included in the nominations for the Group 2 event.

Trust In A Gust started his 2014 Spring Racing Carnival campaign with a narrow win in the Don’t Hold Back Handicap (1200m) at Moonee Valley on August 23 and was narrowly denied a maiden win at black type level in the Listed Drummond Golf Stakes (1200m) at the same venue on September 6 before returning to winning form in the Le Pine Funerals Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield on September 20.

The Keep The Faith entire made his Group 1 debut in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on September 28 and he fought off the fast-finishing Dissident to claim victory before he became the first horse since Barely A Moment in 2005 to complete the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes/Toorak Handicap double when he took out the Group 1 event at the same venue on October 11.

Speediness finished second behind Trust In A Gust in the Toorak Handicap and he will have the chance to turn-the-tables on the four-year-old in the Crystal Mile on Saturday.

The veteran gelding returned to racing with a credible fourth in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington on September 13, but he failed to fire in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes before he returned to his best form in the Toorak Handicap.

Trust In A Gust and Speediness are set to face a similar field in the Crystal Mile; with Desert Jeuney, Akavoroun, Bull Point and Atlante set to back up in the Group 2 event this weekend.

The other key form line heading into the Crystal Mile will be the Group 1 Epsom Handicap and Epsom Handicap runners He’s Your Man, Hooked, Liberty’s Choice, Star Rolling and Woodbine have all been included in the Crystal Mile nominations.

Epsom Handicap winner He’s Your Man appears unlikely to contest the Crystal Mile and will likely have his next race start in either the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) or the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m).

Hooked battled home bravely to finish a tough third in the Epsom Handicap and is expected to run in the Crystal Mile, while Liberty’s Choice, Woodbine and Star Rolling all finished in the top ten in the Group 1 event.

One of the most interesting runners in the 2014 Crystal Mile nominations is Lucky Hussler, who is yet to miss the placings in his four race starts since joining the stable of Darren Weir.

Lucky Hussler finished third in the Drummond Golf Stakes, second in the Le Pine Funerals Handicap and second in the Listed Tavern Stakes (1400m) before he stormed clear of the rest of the field to record a most impressive three and a half lengths win in the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on October 18.
