In second place was Bull Point, followed by Desert Jeuney in third.

Nash Rawiller got Speediness off to a great start, with the talented hoop settling the Testa Rossa gelding early. Michelle Payne brought Akavoroun up to sit not far off the lead. Dwayne Dunn took Atlante wide and fast, no doubt hoping to cut the skilled entire in ahead of the field at the turn.

Ryan Moore found a good spot for Bull Point at second last, and quickly settled into the very rear of the field on the fence.

Havana Rey set the pace, with Hooked following, then Desert Jeuney, then Akavoroun.

The field was fairly well strung out, with Linda Meech consolidating her lead on Havana Rey with a full two lengths clear.

Atlante came in just before the turn and took up third place behind Havana Rey and Hooked. Akavoroun wasn’t far behind.

As they teed up for the straight Hooked responded very well to Craig Williams‘ encouragement, charging home in classic fashion to blow his opponents away. Desert Jeuney almost seemed to have it in the bag when it looked like Ryan Moore had left things too late. However, a combination of Bull Point’s dogged determination and Desert Jeuney’s flagging strength meant Bull Point took out second place by a nose.

Atlante ran in last. Speediness came in fourth.

The Crystal Mile was Race 6 at Moonee Valley today on Cox Plate Day.

The field of eight runners included some genuine talents and was always going to be very tightly contested. Desert Jeuney took the honour of longest odds at $21.

Speediness went into this race as the clear favourite, with Hooked on the second line of betting. Akavoroun was next in line for the punters, with the Lacryma Cristi gelding paying a decent $6 at Ladbrokes.com.au. Trust In A Gust was the punters’ preferred prior to being scratched earlier this morning due to a minor hoof issue. He should be back up and running in a couple of days. He’s still well on track to contest the Group 1 Emirates Stakes.
